Women in the workforce – why restrict to 30%, asks Rafidah

IPOH: There should not be any restricted quota in hiring women in government agencies and private sectors, says Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz.

The former international trade and industry minister said setting a quota would only limit the potential of hiring more capable women.

“These days, there are so many good and capable women. So why do we need to restrict it to only 30%?

“It’s not that we are hiring incapable women. Nowadays, women can compete and sometimes even better than men,” she told reporters after her keynote address at the Pangkor Dialogue held in conjunction with Perak International Expo 2019 at Stadium Indera Mulia today (Nov 14).

On Sept 19, Bernama reported that the plan to have 30% women in public sectors would be brought to the National Women Policy 2021-2025.

Rafidah, who is also the chairman of AirAsiaX Bhd, commented that the number was only applicable for countries on the low end of development like Africa.

“Back in 1980, I represented Malaysia as the delegation head at the United Nation’s Decade of Development in Copenhagen. At the time, Malaysia did not set quota for women as we were still a developing nation.

“But now, there are so many highly qualified women in journalism working as chief editors, and pilots.

“By restricting the number to hire women, we are only stopping ourselves from getting the best,” she said.

Perak investment, Industrial and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, who was also present, said that the state also planned to hire more than 30% women in its administration.

“Perak government will not stop at 30%. We are going beyond, definitely,” he said.
