NGO tells Perak Mentri Besar to step down

2 min read

IPOH: Non-governmental organisation Pro 98 Reformis Perak has urged Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu to resign in order to restore confidence among Pakatan Harapan supporters.

Its secretary Sazali Samsudin said many Pakatan supporters were disappointed with Ahmad’s leadership and in the governance of the state.

“The entire leadership starts with the Mentri Besar.

“For a greater and more meaningful reform agenda and to strengthen the state Pakatan Harapan government, we ask that the Mentri Besar step down to restore confidence among supporters and the people of Perak,” he told reporters after presenting a memorandum on the matter to Ahmad’s special assistant Mohd Jaffrey Mohd Zainol outside of the state secretariat building on Wednesday (Nov 20).

Sazali said their call for Ahmad’s resignation was also to strengthen the state Pakatan coalition, citing several issues that had plagued the state government.

These, he said, included state executive council member Paul Yong being charged for rape, exco member Datuk Abdul Yunus Jamahri being accused of leaking state exco meeting minutes and the “lone battle against DAP” video implicating Ahmad, which caused a controversy during the Tanjung Piai by-election.

Sazali also claimed that there were aspects of favouritism and cronyism being practised by Ahmad.

He alleged that those close to the Menteri Besar were prioritised when filling up vacancies in government-linked companies, agencies and local governments.

Meanwhile, a commotion broke out during the state assembly sitting when Kampung Gajah assemblyman Datuk Dr Wan Norashikin Wan Noordin told the hall that all assemblymen from the Opposition side had received the memorandum.

She asked State Speaker Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham whether he knew about the memorandum, but he said no.

Several Pakatan assemblymen stood up and vehemently denied that the memorandum was handed out to all state representatives.

Ngeh said it was the assistant to state Opposition leader Datuk Saarani Mohamad who distributed the memorandum, and he would investigate the matter.

Ngeh also did not allow Saarani the floor to defend himself.
