MIRI: PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and some 1,200 PKR state and national delegates have turned up for the Sarawak PKR Convention being held here Saturday (Nov 23), but Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian is missing.
Anwar arrived at the convention at a hotel here at 10.30am, coming from Kuala Lumpur.
PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the Sarawak convention was an important avenue for Federal PKR leaders to meet with party grassroots state leaders here.
“At the national level, we PKR leaders want to meet all the PKR state leaders and grassroots. This is to enhance our ties between federal and state,” he said.
On Wednesday (Nov 20), Baru was reported to have said that the convention had been cancelled.
He said this was decided after a majority decision involving 32 of the 46 state leadership council members.
The state party leadership is suffering from a serious split following the move by Baru to openly side with the party’s deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali in his dispute with Anwar.
Over the past few days, there have been public spats and claims of mutiny against Baru’s leadership.
Baru is backed by 18 PKR Sarawak branches, while 11 others have declared their support for Anwar.
