SIBU: A 41-year-old teacher drowned while his son survived when the car they were in crashed and landed upside-down in a drain on Saturday (Oct 26) night.
In the 10.30pm incident, Asri Rizal Rahim, who works as a teacher in a primary school here, was driving along Jalan Ling Kai Cheng when he lost control of the car.
The car rammed into a tree before turning turtle and landing in the drain.
Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Department chief Shairulnizam Wailie said seven firemen in two engines rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 10.44pm.
“The victim, Asri Rizal, was pinned and trapped inside the car.
“His nine-year-old son had been rescued by members of the public before we arrived at the scene,” he said.
The boy was later sent to the hospital for treatment.
Shairulnizam said that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
