PORT DICKSON: Political influence should be used to contribute to the people’s wellbeing, and not to profit oneself, much less to be involved in corruption, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim today.
Anwar, who is the local MP, said: ‘’I will often ensure that for every investor, I will find ways to get allocations from them which can be rerouted to the people … for example, computers for all schools in Port Dickson.
“Rather than take commissions or bribes which have destroyed the country, it is better to use our influence to help the people,’’ he said.
Politicians and others will do so if they are imbued with the spirit of “Addabani Rabbi” in every endeavour, he said.
‘’Prophet Muhammad in his teachings revealed ‘Addabani Rabbi Faahsana Ta’dibi’ which means ‘God, educate us with the best education’. If we ingest the spirit of ‘Addabani Rabbi’, then we will not be inclined towards narrow politics, instigation, racism and corruption. We will then be able to use our influence to defend the welfare of the people.”
Anwar said a major company would be developing a six-star to seven-star hotel in Port Dickson, but the project should bring benefits to the people in terms of job opportunities and facilities that would be made available.
‘’Prior to this, during a retreat with Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun, it was announced that a large firm wants to set up a luxury hotel in Port Dickson. It is not wrong to develop tourism in Port Dickson but the people must benefit from it and not just be able to look at such an expensive hotel.
“The hotel developer had plans also for a theme park beside the hotel, accessible to the public at low rates.
‘’I have also asked the hotel to give training to youths in Port Dickson because the hotel needs 400 workers quickly and 600 workers upon its completion, with accommodation provided. This was what was agreed by the hotel (operators),’’ he said.
Anwar said he had also requested that Japan’s largest IT and electronics company adopt a secondary school in Port Dickson and contribute expertise.
‘’I did not ask for commission from it (company). I did not ask for a computer for myself but I asked that they adopt a secondary school in Port Dickson. The selection of the school is still at the evaluation stage,’’ he added.
